מאז המאה ה-18 ועד עתה התפצלו  צאצאיהם של אנג'לו ארביב ורעייתו שרה, ילידי טריפולי, בירת לוב, לכיוונים שונים בעולם. בני משפחת ארביב, בעלי נתינות איטלקית, היו סוחרים והיו להם קשרי מסחר ומשפחה ברחבי אירופה ואפריקה.

על אף העובדה שפנקסי קהילות לוב אינם בהישג יד, נתגלה מידע עשיר על המשפחה בארכיונים בישראל ובחו"ל.

גם האינטרנט ומקורות המידע באנגליה ובמדינות אחרות מהווים מכרה זהב לחקר המשפחה. הכוונה היא למסמכים קונסולריים ומסחריים, רשימות נוסעים באוניות, תיקי בקשת אזרחות ועוד.

הרצאה זאת תתמקד בתיעוד חייהם של אחדים מבני משפחת ארביב בלוב, אנגליה ואיטליה בהסתמך על מידע חדש שנאסף מתוך יומנים, ספרים, ומסמכים השמורים בארכיונים ובמוזיאונים.

From Tripoli in Libya the descendants of 18^th century patriarch Angelo Arbib and his wife Sarah branched out into different directions settling all over the world in the last couple of hundred years. The Arbibs were merchants, Italian subjects, a cosmopolitan family, with a network of commercial and family ties spread throughout Europe and Africa.

Although much of the community’s records and archives from Libya are not accessible, a wealth of information about the family has been uncovered from documentation and archives in Israel and abroad.

The Internet and resources in England and other countries continue to provide a rich trove of information including consular and trading details, shipping lists, and naturalization files.

The paper follows the lives and activities of several members of the Arbib family in Libya, England and Italy with reference to newly available diaries, books, museum and newspaper archives.

רוזמרי אשל עובדת באגף היודאיקה והאתנוגרפיה היהודית במוזיאון ישראל בירושלים. לפני כן היא היתה האוצרת של המוזיאון לתרבות הבדואית במרכז ג'ו אלון, להב, וכמו כן מדריכה לאומנות יהודית בחבל הדרום במשרד החינוך. היא עסקה במחקר ובארכיונאות במספר מוסדות בארץ ובחו"ל.

Rosemary Eshel works in the Judaica and Jewish Ethnography Wing of The Israel  Museum, Jerusalem,  Israel.  She previously worked as Curator in the Museum of Bedouin Culture, Joe Alon Center, Lahav and Instructor in Jewish Art for the Israel Ministry of Education, Southern Region.  She has been involved in research and archival work for a number of public institutions in Israel and abroad.
