Established 1977, The Haifa Municipal Archives (HMA) about 1200 meters of archival material,
including files, photographs, Municipal publications, maps, etc.
The files are divided into 132 archive record groups (RG) known as “Hativa Archionnit”.
The main difference in collections of the Haifa Municipal Archives (HMA) between 1994 / 5 and today 2004, is the indexing system. In 1994 only few of the files were in a database.
In the last years most of the files were re-indexed several key-words for reach file.
Most of the material is in Hebrew, but there are files from the British Mandate (1918 - 1948) in English and Arabic.
The main function of the archive is as Municipality Archive.
There are old collections of organizations & schools that do not exist today.
There are also a small number of personal files. The archive has a small reference library that includes
municipal publications, books donated to the archive or the municipality and general reference books.
Most of the material is in Hebrew.
Biographies/Autobiographies Most of the biographies of "Yekirei Ha-ir Haifa" (Distinguished citizens of the town) are in the library of the city archives.
Published Research Guides "A Guide to Jewish Genealogical Research in Israel (or GJGRI), (Avotaynu Inc, Teaneck, NJ, 1995)" Pg 74-77 one may find full data of the Genealogical material in the archive.
Directories: There are odd copies of the "Blue Directory". A Hebrew – English Business directory. 1947-1948, 1951-1952 and 1952-1953.
Also they have the "Palestine Export Annual 1945", and "The Palestine Guide" by G. Olaf Maston 1946.
Voter registration: 1920-1948 Elections. Lists of Rishimot Habogrim and Rishimot Habocharim (eligible adults and eligible Voters) Odd copies no complete set. Are RG 8. Vaad Hakehila 1914-1949.
Haifa local elections since 1951. Odd copies no complete set.
Business (merchants, teachers, lawyers etc.) See Blue Directory.
Real estate: The Municipal Engineering department holds the material.
Newspapers/periodicals
Odd issues of local newspapers. Nearly a complete collection of Municipal publications.
Note: The central Municipal library, "Pevzner Library" has a collection of local newspapers (Pvzner St 45 Hadar Hacarmel)

School Records: Yes. Ammy (Elementary) A 1926- 1965, Amal 1951 – 1983, Niv 1945 – 1979, Haya Ziv 1940 – 1979, Geula 1928 – 1984, Even Pina 1933 – 1972 and others.
Photograph Collections:
Yes. About 35,000. Not a very good index.
Collection on Genealogy and family history No family history archives. There are personal archives. In these personal Record Groups one can find files regarding
"Yekirei Ha-ir Haifa" (Distinguished citizens of the town). Other Record Groups are those of prominent citizens. Some were donated by the people themselves and others given by their families who requested that they be kept in the archives instead of being thrown them out. Among them are Joseph Almogy (A former minister and mayor of Haifa), David Hacohen (A promement member of the Knesset (MP)) and other mayors of the city. Please note that the Personal Archive of Abba Chushi who was the mayor between 1951- 1969 is at the Haifa University.

Memorial Books: Odd books in the library.
Map/Postcard Collections: Postcards are in the photograph collection.
The map collection is small and one is advised to go to the Haifa Municipal Engineering Department or the Municipal Road Department for a larger collection. In some maps one may find old street names and house numbers.
Cemeteries In RG 8 there are some of the Pinkassim of the Ashkenazi Chevra Kadisha for the years 1928 – 1938 regarding the old Jewish Cemetery in Jaffa street in Haifa.
Holocaust Related Source In Haifa there is a small Holocaust center which has a library with over 3000 books. In addition to a memorial room, there is also guidance for youth and schools. The name of the place is :
The institute for the Holocaust research on the name of Hedva Aibshetz.
