The cumulative index to Sharsheret Hadorot
covers the first twenty volumes from
1985 to 2006. In 2004, the journal that
appeared three times a year became a
quarterly. Sections like editorials, brief news items, meeting announcements, and Jewish genealogy periodical reviews and abstracts were excluded.

The citation for each item provides the full name of the author, the title and the volume, issue and page numbers. Most of the articles in Sharsheret Hadorot appear in both Hebrew and English. An (E) or (H) preceding the page numbers indicates the section in which the item appears and, as a rule, its language. In a very few cases an English article appears in the Hebrew section, or the reverse.

The index includes five types of entries arranged in a single alphabetical listing.

Author's surnames are generally based on the spelling in the English section. In a substantial number of cases, particularly where the name was transliterated from Hebrew (or from the Cyrillic alphabet via Hebrew) various forms of the name were used for the same person. An attempt has been made to standardize on one form of name for each person in the index. Occasionally, where the various forms were substantially different a cross reference was made. As a general rule author entries are not prepared for book reviewers, though they are noted in the citations. |

Geographical headings have been entered under the country name only. |
|
4.
|
General subjects include all subjects of articles other than those listed above. New books noted and reviewed are listed under BOOKS - NEW / REVIEWED and sometimes under the subject matter with which they deal. |

Cross references are of both the see and see also types. |
