Archives and Archival Material for Genealogical Use - An Update
Coordinated by Meriam Haringman

Almost a decade has gone by since the book “A Guide to Jewish Genealogical Research in Israel “ by Sallyann Amdur Sack and the Israel Genealogical Society was first published. An update is sorely needed for researchers now investigating existing sources. The Archives Committee was created to ensure that archival information is updated to include present holdings, addresses and contact numbers, as well as to add previously unknown archives. A representative of the committee has been assigned to each archive director and is in charge of suggesting possible projects to index or computerize holdings, which will then be made available to the 2004 Conference participants in Jerusalem. Work is presently underway at the following Jerusalem archives: Hebrew University Library, Central Zionist Archives, Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People, Israel State Archives, Yad Vashem, Leo Baeck Institute, Joint Distribution Committee, and the Center for the Study of Italian Jewry. A study is also being made of the following archives in locations other than Jerusalem: Beit Hatefuzot (Museum of the Diaspora), Babylonian Archives, Lohamei Getaot (Ghetto Fighters) Museum and Archives, Tabenkin Institute, Hagana Archives, Bar Ilan University Archives, Tuviyahu Archives at the Ben Gurion University, David Ben Gurion Archives at Sde Boker, Museum of Illegal Immigration, Terezin Archives, Ginzach in Bnei Barak, Cemetery of Safed, and the Hungarian Archives in Safed.
