Helkat Mehokek
Translated Index of 8000 Hebrew Inscriptions on Gravestones Found in Mount of Olives Cemetery for Years 1740-1906 Mathilde Tagger - project coordinator Helkat Mehokek is the title of 4 booklets bound together and published by R’Asher Leib Brisk in Jerusalem between 1906-1913. It contains the exact inscriptions of 8,000 tombstones from the ancient Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives. To enrich the 24th IAJGS International Conference on Jewish Genealogy in Jerusalem, the entire work has been translated and transliterated into English in the form of a searchable database. These 8,000 inscriptions, covering the period between 1740-1906, were originally classified by plot and row, with specially noted plots of tzadikim (Sages). Tombstones are recorded for both men and women. About 1,500 of them are for Sepharadim and 6,500 for Ashkenazim. In addition to the usual information of surname, given names and date of death, the personal data is greatly enriched by the addition of the place of birth, mainly from Eastern Europe for the Ashkenazim and from North Africa and the Ottoman Empire for the Sepharadim. |
